✅ Behavioral Problems of African Grey Parrots

Without the appropriate living conditions or the right training, African grey parrots can develop undesirable behaviors such as:

1. Feather plucking

This behavior in parrots is linked to depression and stress. When they’re left unstimulated, these birds turn to pluck their own feathers to soothe themselves. Another thing that makes parrots pluck their feathers is malnutrition.

To curb this behavior, improve your pet’s diet by providing additional minerals and vitamins.

2. Stress

Lack of mental stimulation or socialization can lead to stress in African grey parrots. Failure to get any of these can lead to the display of irritating behaviors or loud screaming.

Other signs of stress to watch out for in African grey birds are:

  • Hissing
  • Lunging
  • Biting
  • Poor quality of feather
  • Discoloration of feather
  • Stress bars – black lines across the feathers
  • Screeching
  • Self-mutilation

When you notice any of the signs above in your African grey parrot, try to improve its situation by offering more perches and bird toys. Another effective solution is to move its cage to a more quiet location.

African grey parrots are extremely sociable and love spending quality time with their owners. Give your pet some entertainment by interacting and playing with it as often as possible.

3. Jealousy

Most people ask if African parrots are jealous or not. Sadly, jealousy is known to be among their annoying character traits.

Their strong attachment to their caregiver makes them jealous of other pets or humans. Unfortunately, jealousy is hard to control in parrots. But the good news is that you can minimize it by teaching them not to be vocal or nip at people. Paying no attention to the bad behavior of your parrot is another effective way to deal with its jealousy.

4. Aggressiveness

This is not a natural behavior in African grey parrots. But they can become really aggressive if they’re hurt or scared. Other pets agitate parrots easily. Display of stress signs or being vocal is how they show their discomfort when other animals get too close to them.

✅ Different Types of African Grey Parrots You Should Know

There are two different types of African grey parrots.

They’re the;

  • Congo African grey
  • Timneh African grey

1. The Congo African Grey

These types of parrots are mostly found in coastal areas of Africa such as the Ivory Coast, Ghana, and Guinea. They’re bigger than the Timneh parrots with a measurement of 14-16″ and a wingspan of up to 18-20 inches.

380 – 554 grams is the average weight of the Congo African grey parrots. They have darker feathers on their head. Towards the chest and legs are progressively lightening to a silvery grey with a scalloped edge made of white. The beak and nails are solid black, while the bright red tail shows a disparity to the whole of the plumage.

There are no feathers above the nose and around the eyes which exposed the white skin patch. This enables their pink blush to show each time they are scared, upset, or happy.

The Congo African grey parrots are the favorite of most people when it comes to choosing a bird pet.

2. The Timneh African Grey

These are the smallest species that can be found in both West and Central Africa. Their sizes range from 9-11 inches from beak to their tails. The range of their wingspan is between 13-15 inches and weighs up to 300-360 grams.

The grey color in Timneh African grey parrots is darker than that of the Congos. Their upper chest, back, and head are made of dark grey feathers. Another part of their body made of dark grey feathers is their abdomen. And it’s found over a lighter grey plumage that gives it a V shape.

The feathers under the tail of the Timneh African grey parrots are maroon or dark red, and the tail is brown or red. The beaks are tinted with pink and black sides.
